April 02 Pruning perennialsThe weather has finally warmed up and the snow has melted. It's still too early to prune many woody plants, but it is a good time to cut back most perennials. Sedum, grasses, coneflowers, hostas etc. can all be cut right back to where the new growth appears. Do not prune lavender or Russian Sage for at least another month.
Although the soil should not generally be worked this early, this is a good time to plant bare root roses. Order from Hortico or Pickering Nurseries, get them in the ground and mound up the soil. They should be well established by flowering time in June.
